When I was younger, I always thought of buying a house as something everyone did, if they could afford to, and that would be their home. I never considered it as an opportunity for additional income to support me and my family.
Fast forward a number of years and I found myself working in the family business of project management in construction and I was suddenly exposed to a world that was so much bigger than I had ever considered. Alongside my professional exposure, my husband was also operating in the property world, as a letting agent. I was learning all about construction of commercial and residential property whilst also discovering the property sector operations post construction.
Over the years I have supported my husband in flipping two properties and then buying our own home which, on the surface, appeared to be a quick aesthetic fix but turned into a full refurbish. The surprises didn’t stop coming, from a simple wallpaper removal that resulted in the lath and plaster coming with it, to a removal of a chimney that was actually supporting the stairs…. Needless to say, it was a much bigger job than either of us anticipated and brought with it a rollercoaster of emotions, especially as I was pregnant with our first child during the whole process! This experience did not dissuade us from wanting to venture more into property. In fact, when we had our house valued following all the works we had done, it reaffirmed what we already knew, property can be a smart investment.
Due to influences outside our control, my fellow Directors and I made the difficult decision to close the family business after nearly 10 years. Unfortunately, a number of factors, global and industry specific, meant we weren’t happy with the future projections and agreed to have a controlled managed closure. As you can imagine this was not an easy decision and one none of us wanted to make but we knew that it was the correct one. After much soul searching trying to decide what was next for me, I decided to fully throw myself into the property world. Property investment had become an aspiration for myself and my husband, ever since that first flip. Our goal is to have a portfolio of properties that provide us with a passive income that can support our family and provide us with financial security and freedom. As I was going to be embarking on this journey anyway, I thought ‘why not take others along for the ride so they can realise their dreams?’. Through much education and research, I learned of numerous strategies within the property sector and settled on property sourcing (a.k.a. property finding) as the best fit for me.
One of my main goals is to travel the world with my family. We’re going to climb those mountains, swim those oceans and immerse ourselves in different cultures and experiences. Everyone’s goals and motivations are different but to have the chance to turn those dreams into reality is priceless.
